Smeg ECF02 espresso machine: 15-bar Italian thermoblock in a 15 cm footprint

Smeg ECF02 1950s retro pump espresso machine in cream steel with stainless steel steam wand

Manufactured in Italy as the second-generation upgrade to the original ECF01, the Smeg ECF02 packs a 1350W fast-heat thermoblock and a 15-bar pressure pump into a 14.9-centimetre-wide steel body.

Featuring a 51 mm stainless steel portafilter with both pressurised and unpressurised filter baskets, it reaches brewing temperature in 40 seconds and includes a dedicated steam wand for milk microfoam.

For years, people loved the 1950s rounded silhouette of Smeg’s first espresso maker (the ECF01), but serious coffee drinkers had two fair complaints: it only came with pressurised double-wall baskets, and the steam wand had a bulky outer sleeve that made big, airy bubbles instead of smooth flat-white foam.

With the updated ECF02 – designed and built in Italy – Smeg redesigned the internal coffee workflow while keeping the exact same compact exterior that fits into the tightest apartment kitchens. It closes out our guide to European kitchen appliances worth the counter space and pairs naturally with our European coffee bar essentials.

What changed on the new Italian-made Smeg ECF02?

  1. Four filter baskets (Pressurised & Unpressurised): If you buy pre-ground supermarket coffee or paper ESE pods, you use the two pressurised baskets for guaranteed crema. If you own a proper burr grinder and buy fresh whole beans, the ECF02 now includes single and double unpressurised baskets for authentic café extraction.
  2. Bare stainless steel steam wand: The old metal frothing sleeve is gone, replaced by a streamlined stainless steel steam pipe with two steam intensity levels – giving you proper vortex control when texturing milk for a cappuccino.
  3. Simplified 4-button top control panel: Instead of scrolling through blinking menus, an White Mode gives you single espresso, double espresso, and low-level steam, while pressing the Orange Mode button accesses long espresso drinks and high-output milk steaming.
  4. Programmable temperature and water hardness: Holds three selectable brewing temperatures and a three-stage water hardness alarm (soft, medium, hard) that lights up only when the thermoblock genuinely requires descaling.
