Making traditional cold brew requires steeping coffee grounds in the fridge for 18 hours. The Italian-designed Smeg ECF03 uses room-temperature pulsed pressure to extract sweet, low-acid cold brew in under two minutes – alongside normal hot espresso.
The Smeg ECF03 is a 1950s-style semi-automatic pump espresso machine that combines a 15-bar thermoblock heating system for hot espresso with a low-pressure ambient extraction cycle for rapid cold brew.
Using standard ground coffee in a 51 mm stainless steel portafilter, it brews a single or double cold brew in under 120 seconds without heating the water.
People like cold brew in the summer for a very logical reason – because cold water never cooks the heavy oils inside the coffee bean, the drink comes out naturally sweet and roughly 65% less acidic than hot coffee poured over ice.
The problem is time. Steeping coarse grounds in a jar for twenty-four hours requires you to predict on Tuesday afternoon that you will want an iced coffee on Wednesday morning. If you forget, you are out of luck. That practical engineering fix is why the ECF03 earned a spot in our guide to vintage European kitchen essentials.
How does the Smeg ECF03 make cold brew in two minutes?
Instead of relying on time, the ECF03 relies on modulated water pressure. When you select one of the two blue cold-brew buttons on the top panel, the internal thermoblock heater stays completely off:
- Ambient pre-infusion: The pump gently wets the coffee puck with room-temperature water from the 1.4-litre tank, allowing the grounds to bloom.
- Pulsed pressure extraction: Rather than blasting the puck at a full 15 bars (which would taste sour with cold water), the pump pulses water through the grounds at lower, alternating pressure over roughly 90 to 120 seconds.
- Ready over ice: The resulting concentrate drops straight into your glass, tasting smooth and floral without diluting your ice cubes.
What changed between the Smeg ECF02 and the new ECF03?
If you are comparing Smeg’s 1950s espresso line, the older ECF01 and ECF02 look nearly identical from across the room, but the internal workflow on the ECF03 has been noticeably upgraded:
| Feature | Smeg ECF02 (Standard retro) | Smeg ECF03 (Cold brew edition) |
| Brewing modes | Hot espresso only (4 buttons) | Hot espresso + rapid Cold Brew (6 buttons) |
| Pressure monitoring | No gauge | Built-in analogue front pressure gauge (barometer) |
| Water tank capacity | 1.1 litres | 1.4 litres (fewer refills during summer) |
| Portafilter & baskets | 51 mm with pressurised & unpressurised filters | 51 mm stainless steel with 4 filters (double & single wall) |
| Temperature settings | 3 programmable hot water temperatures | 3 hot temperatures + ambient cold extraction + water hardness setting |
A year-round appliance for small European counters
At just 14.9 centimetres wide, the ECF03 takes up less horizontal space on a worktop than a loaf of bread. Founded in Guastalla, Emilia-Romagna in 1948 as a metal-enamelling workshop, Smeg builds the curved housing with a removable cup tray so tall iced-coffee glasses fit cleanly under the spouts in July, while classic ceramic espresso cups sit close to the group head in December.
- Origin: Italy (designed in Guastalla, brand founded in 1948)
- Dimensions: 33 cm (H) × 14.9 cm (W) × 32.9 cm (D)
- Heating system: Fast-heat Thermoblock (1350W) with 15-bar pump
- Cold brew cycle time: Approx. 1–2 minutes for single or double cold extraction
