Engineered in Zug, Switzerland by Fabian Zimmerli for Stadler Form, Sophie is a cordless aroma diffuser and outdoor-rated lantern that simulates a flickering candle flame using illuminated ultrasonic water mist. Topped with a curved Moso bamboo handle and an IP44 splash-proof body, it runs for up to 11 hours on battery power at an inaudible 26 decibels.
Real candles and open bio-ethanol burners look lovely in the evening, but they release soot, dry out the air, and cannot be left unattended near curtains or pets. Standard essential oil diffusers, on the other hand, usually look like white plastic cones that belong in a dentist’s waiting room.
Founded by Martin Stadler in Switzerland in 1998, Stadler Form combined both functions into a dark, smoked-polycarbonate lantern. Because its matte black frame and warm amber glow bring instant evening atmosphere to a dark corner, it features in our European style living room decor guide and our Neo Deco living room inspiration piece.
How “Amber Light” creates a cool-to-the-touch flame
There is no heat element inside Sophie. Instead, a high-frequency ultrasonic membrane at the bottom of the 100 ml water reservoir vibrates water and pure essential oil into a column of microscopic cool mist.
As that dense plume of mist rises through the central chimney, recessed warm-amber LEDs shine directly upwards into the vapour. The moving mist catches the light and flickers exactly like a natural fire flame – except you can pass your hand straight through it without feeling heat, and you can switch the LED dimmer off completely if you only want scent in a dark bedroom.
