Most floral throw pillows look like they belong in a stuffy Victorian guest bedroom where nobody is allowed to sit down. When Maija Isola painted the bold Unikko poppy for Marimekko in Helsinki in 1964, she proved that a single oversized flower could wake up a minimalist Nordic room without making it look fussy.
The Marimekko Unikko cushion cover (50 × 50 cm) is a heavyweight Finnish home textile printed at Marimekko’s Helsinki textile mill using Maija Isola’s iconic 1964 Unikko (poppy) pattern.

There is a well-known story behind this print. In the early 1960s, Marimekko founder Armi Ratia publicly announced that the company would never print floral textiles, arguing that flowers look better in nature than on fabric.
Designer Maija Isola ignored her boss completely and painted an entire series of graphic, abstracted poppies in protest. Ratia took one look at Unikko and put it into immediate production, where it has remained for over sixty years.
