Le Creuset stoneware French press: why thick French clay keeps coffee hot

Le Creuset 1-litre stoneware French press cafetiere in Artichaut green glaze on a wooden breakfast table

Standard glass cafetières have two predictable habits – they lose all their heat within ten minutes, and they shatter the first time you tap them against a cast-iron sink. Le Creuset replaces thin glass with high-fired French stoneware that holds warmth for a slow second cup.

The Le Creuset stoneware French press is a 1-litre immersion coffee brewer crafted from high-fired clay and sealed with a non-porous vitreous enamel glaze. Equipped with a stainless steel mesh plunger assembly, it retains heat up to three times longer than uninsulated glass presses while resisting coffee oil staining.

Rushing through breakfast with a paper cup in your hand is a depressing way to start a Tuesday. Across Europe, morning coffee is supposed to sit on the table next to bread and butter while you read or talk.

Founded in Fresnoy-le-Grand in 1925, Le Creuset applies the same kiln rules to this press that made its cast iron famous. It plays a central role in our guide to coffee rituals across Europe and earns its keep on our list of vintage European kitchen essentials.

Stoneware vs borosilicate glass: what happens to the coffee?

How to brew in stoneware without losing temperature

Because dense stoneware absorbs heat when it is cold, pouring boiling water straight into a chilly pot will drop your extraction temperature by four or five degrees.

Before adding your coarse coffee grounds, swirl a cup of hot tap water inside the empty Le Creuset jug for thirty seconds and tip it out. Once pre-warmed, those thick clay walls act like a kiln brick, keeping your four-minute steep at the proper temperature and holding the remaining coffee hot for the next half hour.
