Bodum Brazil French press: 1980s Danish borosilicate glass and mesh filtration

Designed in the 1980s to embody Peter Bodum’s 1944 Copenhagen motto that good design should not be expensive, the Bodum Brazil French press strips immersion brewing down to three honest materials: heat-resistant borosilicate glass, a stainless steel mesh filter, and a lightweight BPA-free polypropylene frame.

Glass cafetières enclosed in heavy metal cages look ornate, but the metal band often traps water against the glass and adds unnecessary weight when pouring. The Bodum Brazil replaces the decorative cage with a single moulded polypropylene base and handle unit that clips cleanly around the beaker.

Because the base acts as a built-in heat trivet, you can set a freshly boiled pot directly onto an oiled oak dining table or work desk without leaving white heat rings. It is the most accessible daily brewer in our home coffee station setup guide and a staple of our coffee rituals across Europe overview.

How the 3-part stainless steel plunger keeps silt out of the cup

Immersion brewing differs from paper drip coffee because the natural coffee oils stay in the liquid rather than getting trapped in bleached paper. To stop coarse coffee grounds from slipping past the edges of the filter, the Brazil uses a three-piece stainless steel plunger assembly:

  1. The perforated cross-plate: Distributes downward hand pressure evenly across the water column so the plunger never tilts sideways inside the glass cylinder.
  2. The peripheral spiral spring: Coiled around the outer edge of the plate, this tension spring presses the fine wire mesh firmly against the internal borosilicate glass walls as you push down.
  3. The woven stainless steel micro-mesh: Filters out coarse bean particles while allowing emulsified coffee oils to pass through for a rich, full-bodied mouthfeel.

Bodum Brazil 3-cup vs 8-cup: choosing the right station volume

Note that European French press “cup” measurements are based on 120 ml (4 oz) demitasse servings rather than oversized 300 ml mugs:

SpecificationBodum Brazil 3-Cup (0.35 L) HTMLBodum Brazil 8-Cup (1.0 L)
Total liquid volume350 ml (12 fl oz)1,000 ml (34 fl oz)
Real-world mug yield1 generous mug (or 2 small breakfast cups)3 full mugs (or 6 small after-dinner cups)
Dimensions (H × W × D)16.0 × 11.0 × 8.0 cm21.5 × 16.0 × 11.0 cm
Recommended coffee dose21 grams coarse-ground coffee60 grams coarse-ground coffee

Both the borosilicate glass beaker and the disassembled steel plunger go straight into the dishwasher after use, ensuring old coffee oils never turn bitter between brews.
